Mushrooms, salmon or crispy bacon–Whichever your preference, order it on sourdough with some eggs and hollandaise sauce and you’re starting your weekend off right. The Auckland brunch scene is bursting at the seams, and the selection of Eggs Benedict is equally thriving. For those weekends where you’re getting the family together, or you’re just plain starving: Here’s a list of our favourite eggs bene spots around Auckland.
The hype is justified, Crave in Morningside has got the goods for your weekend splurge, no matter the occasion. Come Sunday morning this place is bursting with bubbly locals and large groups. The stylish interior and friendly staff make this spacious cafe a safe bet, for as many friends you can possibly string together. The benes are gluten-free with your choice of bacon or salmon served on a crispy potato hash brown. Their special chimichurri or beetroot hollandaise adds that extra kick you didn’t know your morning needed.
The Junction Eatery
For an elegantly modern setting and a breakfast to fill your cup, head over to the North Shore’s Junction Eatery. The spacious interior gives you stunning views of the city from afar, as you dig into an overwhelming menu. The Eggs Benedict here has a bit of a twist with your traditional bread layer swapped for a tasty vegetable gratin–Curious? We were too. To tempt your tastebuds even more, top your bene with a choice of free-range bacon, portobello mushrooms, or our favourite: The beetroot infused salmon gravlax.
Looking for some comfort food and a homely atmosphere? Shamrock Cottage in Howick is the comfy cafe you didn’t know you were missing. Cosy up with an old friend and kill some hours as you settle in by the fire on a cold day, or out in the courtyard if it’s tanning weather. Choose your eggs on crispy ciabatta or loaded on potato and herb cakes (highly recommended) with bacon or salmon. Whether you’re from the area or not, the unique and homely ambience is worth a trip as a bit of a change from the typical Auckland dining scene.
St Heliers Bay Bistro
If you need a side of relaxation with your breakfast, St Heliers Bay Bistro should be your first stop. Park up opposite the beach and unwind with a coffee and a bene as you people-watch and maybe even consider a quick swim on a good day. The bacon Eggs Benedict is equally as enjoyable as the views, with the bread locally supplied by the bakers at Amano. Bring a book and have a slow morning here as you’ll want to stay awhile.
Cornwall Park Bistro
Sunday blues have you stuck in bed? Organise that overdue family catch up and grab brunch at Cornwall Park. The Eggs Benedict here is a hefty portion set on homemade English muffins that’ll put any Maccas McMuffin to shame. Choose a seat on the deck to soak up some sun and you’ll snatch a great view of the greenery, and sheep roaming around the park. If you have room in your stomach post-bene, grab a scoop (or two) of ice cream outside at the Cornwall Park Creamery and take a stroll around the area or a 15-minute walk up to One Tree Hill for some fresh air.
Talk about brunch! Ignored your Mum’s texts for a month too long? Take a walk around Parnell and treat her to a seriously good bene at Winona Forever. Flowers aren’t in short supply as they top both the food and the tables for a stunning interior. If you can ignore the decadent slices and treats in the cabinet long enough to order from the menu, the hot smoked honey-infused salmon Eggs Benedict is a real winner. Brought out to you, avocado mousse, flowers, and all, you’ll find it hard to not whip out your camera for a snap of the colourful dish. Not a salmon fan? Winona is known for twisting standard dishes on their head–Opt for the marinated pork belly with your eggs and you won’t be disappointed.
Simon & Lee
If you are bold enough to look past the black waffles with chargrilled banana at Simon and Lee, you will be pleasantly rewarded as this bene is the Asian Fusion mixtape of all benes. Think: Kimchi, miso truffle béchamel, nori, sesame seeds, with bacon or beetroot cured salmon, all topped on English muffins and you’ve got an intensely satisfying combination of flavours that’ll get you questioning the classic Eggs Benedict.
Perfect for the work break or a weekend outing of its own–If you get in before the queue! Major Sprout shows off a clean and spacious interior with industrial undertones, complementing the Auckland brunch scene perfectly. In the bene department, opt for the famous green Eggs Benedict that’ll change your mind about green eggs and ham. Towered on a potato rosti with spinach and your choice of house-cured slab bacon or smoked salmon, there’s no room for disappointment...or dessert.
