Where to Find Auckland's Best Cinnamon Rolls

By Alexandra Neilson
Cinnamon rolls

The humble cinnamon roll, these little scrolls of deliciousness are as common as muck. While some may say it’s harder to find a café or bakery that doesn’t serve cinnamon rolls–It’s important to acknowledge that not all of these sweet little morsels were created equal. Life’s too short for bad buns and if you want to eat the softest and fluffiest cinnamon rolls of the lot (and of course you do,) check out the list to visit some of Auckland’s best.

The Pie Piper & Doornuts

321 Karanghape Road, Auckland CBD

Okay, we know, we know–This is a donut spot. But, bear with us because the Princess Leia cinnamon glazed scroll here is out of this galaxy. A little denser than the traditional cinnamon scroll, The Pie Piper does what it does best and gives the traditional fluffy cinnamon roll a North American makeover. Self-proclaimed as “fit for a princess” this vegan donut scroll is dripping with cinnamon glaze and goodness.

Pandoro

Various Locations

You can’t throw a stone without hitting a Pandoro in Auckland, and that’s lucky for us seeing as they’ve got some of the best cinnamon rolls around. Even if you haven’t visited a Pandoro, you’ve likely eaten their delicious baking already. As one of Auckland’s largest boutique Italian bakery stockists for the last 20 years, the cinnamon scrolls here are a sticky, cinnamon-spiced classic.

Hare and the Turtle

1/63 New Windsor Road, New Windsor
Cinnamon Roll from Hare and the Turtle

While offering everything from breakfast to lunch, cinnamon rolls are the true star of the show at Hare and the Turtle. Located on an unassuming suburban street corner, it’s hard to believe that this spot could harbour some of the most delicious buns around–But they do. Everything at Hare and the Turtle is inspired by American comfort food, and the cinnamon rolls here are a fresh take on the classic Cinnabon (but to be honest, this is better).

Petit Bocal

177 Sandringham Road, Sandringham

If you prefer a fluffier French pasty vibe to your cinnamon rolls, look no further than Petit Bocal. Tucked away on Sandringham Road, Petit Bocal gives the cinnamon roll a delicate flakey makeover–And damn she looks good! And the bright open space and delicious coffee makes this the perfect spot for relaxing all morning. La vie est belle!

Bestie Café

179/183 Karangahape Road, Auckland CBD

Located in the long-standing St. Kevin’s Arcade off K’Road, Bestie Café are known for their baked goods for a reason. The cinnamon buns here go down the powdered route, with no icing in sight. But before you click out of this article in disgust, we can assure you the intricate layers of sugar and cinnamon sandwiched between golden pastry will win your heart over in no time.

Scandibunz

Online + Select Stockists

It would be criminal to write an article about cinnamon rolls without including the pieces of art that are Scandibunz. Championing the hashtag #notbrioche, duo Susanne and Bobby are taking markets across Britomart, Parnell, and Takapuna (and more) by storm. You’ll have to keep up to date on their Instagram to get your bun fix, but we can promise you it’s worth it. The cinnamon rolls here are Scandinavian style, soft and aromatic with cinnamon and buttery caramel–In other words, insane.
