An exciting new menu from a well-known and beloved eatery always has us waiting in anticipation to try it for ourselves.

The Franklin, Beachland's wonderful kitchen and taphouse, has reinvented themselves with a brand new menu from Chef Duncan. The sweet seaside-themed restaurant sits in the newly developed section of Beachlands in East Auckland. Quickly gaining momentum since opening in 2017, The Franklin brings in locals and visitors from across Auckland – pining for their delicious house-made contemporary pub dishes and relaxed atmosphere.

Consistently hitting the nail on the head with each and every feature they hold at The Franklin, we knew a brand new menu would not disappoint. The new menu was introduced last week in Level 3, and is now finally available for dine-in in Alert Level 2.

Starting off the new menu is the small plates section, with standouts including Popcorn shrimp tacos with jalapeño lime aioli, Franky's hot wings with pickles & blue cheese, and Karaage Chicken with tonkatsu mayo and chilli-mayo slaw (possibly the dish we're the most excited to try). We'll never pass up ordering fried chicken if it's on the menu, and reports coming back to us can confirm it's as great as it sounds.

Moving down the menu, you'll find the obligatory fresh oysters – the key to any Auckland menu. The Franklin serve them up freshly shucked with shallot vinegar or battered if you wish.

A selection of dishes under the Large Plates section have caught our eye, branching out with two new vegetarian dishes that would turn any meat-lover herbivore. The Eggplant parmigiana is already a winner, served up Napoli sauce, basil, buffalo mozzarella, garlic croutons for just $25, as is the Wild mushroom fettuccine with truffle & confit garlic creme, cashew butter, baby spinach, and a sprinkling of grana padanoat the same price point.

Among the rest are Pork Belly on toasted rice, Gnocchi with sautéed scallops and Spanish chorizo, Eye fillet with braised cheek and truffle croquette, smoked BBQ ribs, and The Franklin's iconic Fish and Chips.

Enjoy freshly shucked oysters by the sea.

Anyone who's visited the sunny spot knows The Franklin is also renowned for their Wood-fired Pizzas. Not to fear, these bad boys have not left the menu and continue to boast the best flavours including Prawn with rocket, creme fraiche, and chilli flakes, Sirloin with blue cheese, caramelised onion, and Pumpkin with spinach, pinenuts, mascarpone, and parmesan – all topping a delicious crispy pizza base.

The Franklin's cosy and contemporary decor.

Our suggestion is always to order up large at The Franklin, take a brisk walk on the beautiful Maraetai Beach to build up an appetite and get to work tasting as many delicious dishes as possible. The sunny courtyard provides the perfect setting for a Franklin Cocktail or chilled glass of white wine, or cosy up indoors with a barista-made Toasted Coffee coffee.

Enjoy the scenic drive out to Beachlands and make a day of celebrating the little spots in Auckland that make the city great. To view the entirety of the new menu at The Franklin head here, and to book your table (we're telling you, they're popular!) head here.
