Here at Dish Cult, we love bringing you new venues, menus, and hidden gems for you to sink your teeth into. This week we're highlighting a cosy little spot we've had the recent pleasure of exploring. Tucked neatly into Ellerslie's Main Highway sits Union Post.

As you may have guessed, Union Post sits in the old haunt of what was previously Ellerslie's Post Bank many years ago. Today, it's a fresh bright space with a lovely indoor-outdoor flow and maximum afternoon sunlight streaming in from the large glass windows.

Possessing the beloved and age-old character of a local neighbourhood bar and bistro, Union Post manages to harness the nonchalant vibe of a spot to grab an afternoon drink and a couple of bar snacks, as well as the upscale niceties of a sit-down family-friendly bistro. Here's how they do it:

The indoor-outdoor function of Union Post allows for several different areas of the eatery to be secluded off into their own environment. While the beer garden to the left acts as the perfect place for a round with the co-workers, the Aubrey dining room to the right, or even the back courtyard is optimal for a family-gathering or simple date night dinner, all at the same time.

The thing that drew us in at this particular time was the brand new seasonal menu from the talented team at Union Post. Their new menu heading into the colder months is chef-driven, focusing on meals to suit every type of diner to walk through their doors.

Whether it's good old pub grub you want, or a more refined food experience, Union Post manages to hit the nail on the head with every dish.

Stand-outs already include their house-made Roasted Kumara Hummus and Flatbread, Truffle Garlic Pizza Bread with prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella, Whole Roasted Harissa Kumara with Roasted Artichoke and Sunflower cream, and their Herb Roasted Chicken Breast swimming in a serving of parmesan gnocchi, roasted pumpkin, and a sage nut-brown butter.

Of course, they have your favourite snack plates too, just at a higher quality than you may be used to at your local. The Crispy Fried Chicken with buffalo hot sauce arrives in a generous portion with the exact right seasoning to really bring it to life with maximum crunch.

Naturally, there has to be a platter on the menu for those indulgent afternoon sessions. Union Post combines all their best pieces to create the ultimate board to share, featuring lamb shoulder croquettes, crispy calamari, lime & coriander falafel, roasted pumpkin & sage arancini, and our favourite roasted kumara hummus.

With careful attention to detail, ratios, and flavour balancing, the menu boasts a wide range of house-made chef dishes, destroying the narrative of frozen bar food.

One of our favourite features of the menu is the knowledgeable staff and their expert wine pairing for each and every dish. Carrying more than your usual offerings, there's a perfectly matched wine to go with every dish, from the Graham Norton Shiraz from South Australia to the Vegan Soho Pink Sheep Organic Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough.

The team at Union Post pay careful attention to any dietary requirements, with an impressive amount of vegan options on the menu (including all seven of the pizzas), that deter from the usual monotonous vegan options on a menu.
