Spring into the new year with a new hobby under your belt courtesy of some special help from Homeland.
Homeland is the newly opened establishment on Auckland's Westhaven Drive. Created to be Aotearoa's embassy for food with renowned Kiwi chef Peter Gordon and his partner, Alastair Carruthers, at the helm, it lives up to any and all expectations of a pristine dining experience.
Aside from serving up exquisite seasonal dishes (which highlight a variety of Kiwi producers and growers), Homeland was designed to not only be a place to dine, but a place to share, converse, learn, swap recipes, and connect with the community.
Since opening in November 2020, we've been counting down the days until their cooking classes with Chef Peter Gordon himself launch. And that day has finally come. The Homeland Cooking School is now open!
We really mean it when we say there's something for everyone at Homeland's Cooking School. Whether you're a true beginner in the kitchen or you're wanting to dive deeper into a certain aspect of gastronomy, there's a masterclass to suit. If baking is more you're thing, opt into Homeland's Best Baking sessions, where you'll learn to recreate Peter Gordon's beloved Cheese Scone recipe, as well as a few sweet treats from his repertoire, sending you home with at least three different batches of treats to enjoy.
The Salad Masterclass will walk you through turning a limp side dish into a vibrant bowl of nutrition and flavour made from local, seasonal produce. While the Take Your Pulse classes will educate attendees on all things grains and pulses – how to identify them, how to cook them perfectly, and how to not be afraid to add another grain to your cooking abilities.
The Modern Roast will teach you to make the ultimate homely meal, perfect for any kind of gathering with your loved ones. Levelling up from the classic roasts you may have grown up on, Peter will guide you through the protein and veggies to create an impressive contemporary take on the Sunday roast.
Lastly, the Freshly Caught sessions are for all the seafood lovers out there. You'll bring in your very own catch of the day and be guided through the best ways to make your prized-catch shine. Cleaning and gutting is available at Kai Ika in the Westhaven Marina with payment of a koha before your class. The flavours will be simple to recreate at home, but packed with enough punch to impress even the fussiest of your whānau.
Each masterclass clocks in between two to three hours for $120pp, with some special rates for children 16 & younger for certain classes. Each class is taught by Peter Gordon, with plenty of kai to enjoy in class and to take home. No matter your expertise or skill level, Homeland is solely here to expand your viewpoint and share their love of food with the community.
