A staple part of Kiwi diets, the humble cheese toastie is close to many of our hearts. But what makes one toastie stand out from the rest? McClure Pickles aims to find out once again, with their 2021 search for New Zealand’s Best Toastie.

With entries spanning the entire country, you won’t have to travel far to judge the entries for yourself. This year's astounding 50% increase in entries means there’s more to choose from than ever. The 125 entries come from bars, cafés, breweries, food trucks, vineyards and delis, to name a few.

There aren’t just more contestants this year, there’s also more diversity. With 10% of options catering to vegans and vegetarians, there’s an option for everyone. From hangi to haggis – you really will find anything and everything in these entries.

New Zealand's Toastie Takeover is back for 2021!

You can expect to see some of your favourite names throwing their hat in the ring – entries from Coroglen Tavern, the Cardrona Hotel, Burger Burger, Daily Bread, and Farro Fresh are sure to excite the judges.

2020’s winner “Bat out of Hell” came from Dunedin toastie joint Hungry Hobos, and featured a family meatloaf recipe, creamy mashed potatoes, aged cheddar and McClure’s Sweet & Spicy Pickles, all lovingly placed between ciabatta. Will the reigning champions manage to retain their title with a sweet and spicy pulled pork creation?

If you’re a passionate toastie connoisseur, you can have your say in the People’s Choice Award division. You can either visit their website or ask your favourite eatery how to do this.

While many of these options are exciting and diverse, there are still rules to the toastie game. Each entry must be between two bread slices, and eaten by hand. There’s room for creativity, but each entry still has to pay homage to the Kiwi classic.

Judging began on 13 May 2021, with the top 12 revealed on 1 July 2021. July will see the competition’s dedicated toastie judge to visit the finalists and sample their entry. After a month of deliberation, the 2021 supreme winner will be announced on 30 July, but for now – get out there and declare your personal winner!
